Antifungals

Antifungals are primarily used to combat infections in immunocompromised individuals and post-transplantation.  There are few targets and chemical classes with three types of antifungal currently in clinical use, polyenes, triazoles, and echinocandins, agents that alter membrane function, cell wall structure and DNA and protein synthesis.  Most antifungal agents are not completely effective due to the development of resistance, toxicity and side effects that limit their use and new resistance patterns have emerged including simultaneous resistance to different antifungal classes.
