Endothelin converting enzyme 1
Endothelin converting enzyme 1 (ECE 1) is involved in the proteolytic processing of endothelin-1, endothelin-2, and endothelin-3 to biologically active peptides. Endothelin converting enzyme-1 and 2 (ECE-1 and ECE-2) are expressed in endothelial cells and neurones, respectively, and both cleave 'big endothelin' to produce the vasoconstrictor endothelin-1 (ET-1). ECE-1 and ECE-2 also degrade amyloid beta. Elevated levels of ECE-1 have been observed in a range of malignancies, with high expression conferring poor prognosis.
