Neuromedin U receptors
Neuromedin U receptors exist as two subtypes, neuromedin U receptor 1 (NMU1) and neuromedin U receptor 2 (NMU1). Neuromedin U receptors have distinct physiological functions in peripheral tissues and in the central nervous system, according to their tissue distributions. NMU1 is expressed predominantly in the peripheral nervous system, with highest levels in the gastrointestinal tract, whereas NMU2 is mainly found in the CNS, with greatest expression in the hypothalamus, medulla, and spinal cord. NMU1 and NMU2 receptors are stimulated by two endogenous neuropeptides, neuromedin U and neuromedin S, which have similar binding affinities. Neuromedin U receptors are involved in a variety of physiological functions, including the regulation of blood pressure, food uptake, nociception, pain, bone formation, and immunological responses.
