Chemerin receptors
Chemerin is a chemoattractant protein and adipokine, and the endogenous ligand for the chemerin family receptors chemerin receptor 1 (CMKLR1, chemerin1) and chemerin receptor 2 (chemerin2). Chemerin and its receptors are widely expressed in humans, rats and mice, and both chemerin receptors share approximately 80% identity in these species. Chemerin is initially secreted by the liver and white adipose tissue as prochemerin, a 163-amino acid precursor protein which is readily converted into active chemerin by various proteases.
Depending on the site of cleavage and subsequent interaction with its receptors, chemerin has varying degrees of bioactivity and can have pro- or anti-inflammatory roles. It is also involved in adipogenesis, angiogenesis, skin function, obesity, glucose intolerance, cardiovascular disease, cancer, steroidogenesis, human immunodeficiency virus replication, neurogenerative disease and metabolic syndrome, as well as having a role in reproductive biology.
